How New Beginnings Blossomed Into Lasting Connections: Caroline's Story

The term ‘joyful’ is best used to describe Caroline, a student at The Elaine Clark Center who enjoys Target, Disney music, and Five Below. Caroline, who is Autistic and non-verbal, began attending ECC in 1997 at the age of 2 years old.

Caroline’s family found the center while seeking a small class environment with supportive teachers to address Caroline’s needs. Caroline attended ECC for several years before public school and also returned for various summer camps.

“ECC has been such a support to our family with summer camps, the early school program, the after-school program, and now ECC Life,” said Caroline’s mother Kathy. Since 2023, Caroline has been enrolled in the ECC Life program, which continues to provide the support her family has valued for years. Over the past 25 years, ECC has been a consistent resource for Caroline and her family.

The programs have not only helped with Caroline’s communication, independence, and life skills but have also fostered lasting relationships. “Joi Rachmann has been so supportive over the many years. The teachers (both then and now) have provided guidance and have helped brainstorm solutions to many behaviour questions over the years,” said Kathy.

Kathy acknowledges that ECC Life has a great group of young adults who are welcoming to Caroline and include her in their activities. Over the past 25 years, Kathy has made so many friends with teachers, and built strong relationships with staff and other families.
